What to Do When One pet dog is Jealous of the other and Growls?

What do you do if one of your dogs growls at the others out of what appears to be jealousy?

I actually get this question about once a week. I’m writing this post so I have an post to share.

I’d also like this to be a place where people can ask questions or give advice.

The scenario is typically like this:

You try to give affection to your small dog. She jumps onto your lap and you pet her. then your big pet dog techniques and sticks her head on your lap for some attention too. This is when the small pet dog proceeds to bark and growl at the big dog.

It wouldn’t have to be small pet dog vs. big dog, but let’s face it – it typically is! but it could also be two big dogs or two small dogs.

Maybe one pet dog tends to lie at the owner’s feet growling as the other pet dog approaches. Or maybe one is on the couch and growls as the other comes near.

So what’s happening here?

Well, it’s always good to seek advice from with a professional trainer if your’e anxious about aggression. Every situation is different, and it’s impossible to give recommendations on a certain dog’s behavior over email or in a general blog post.

But here’s my general feedback:

This type of growling or “guarding” makes sense. The pet dog is resource guarding and YOU are the resource.

If the pet dog doing the growling is normally the “weaker” of the two dogs, this may be the only time you ever see her growling or standing up for herself because she’s protecting her power source (YOU). You make her feel a lot more powerful and she may even feel like you’re backing her up or protecting her.

And sadly, if one dog is very pushy or bossy, the only time your a lot more sensitive or “weaker” dog might get attention in any way is when she sits on your lap or on the couch next to you. So you bet she’s going to guard you in those situations, it’s the only real affection she gets!

People might describe this as “jealousy” but it’s normally resource guarding, which is normal pet dog behavior but something we normally don’t want to encourage. See: how to break a dog’s possessiveness.

So here’s what to do:

How to stop my pet dog from getting jealous and growing at my other dog

1. Remember, you get to decide who approaches you.

You are the person in charge, right? So, YOU decide which dog sits with you and you decide which dog gets your attention and when. Your dogs don’t get to decide, not when it’s resulting in aggression or guarding. So that’s my first tip. Be aware of who you’re giving attention to and make sure you really are the one making that decision!

2. Enforce a no dogs on the furniture policy for now.

Do this especially if being on the furniture is part of what’s triggering the guarding/jealousy. I have a cat (Beamer!) who likes to sit on my bed. When my pet dog so much as walks by the bed, Beamer swipes and hisses at the dog. He’s being a bully and possessive of the bed!

So what do I do?

I immediately remove the cat from the bed and put him on the floor. It changes his state of mind and energy instantly.

3. Don’t allow the pet dog to sit at your feet guarding you.

Once you actually think about this you might realize, wow, my pet dog really does sit and guard me at my feet! If you catch either pet dog doing this, shoo her away, tether her across the room or put her in a down/stay on her pet dog bed. Or, simply get up and step somewhere else so she can’t guard you.

I run into this problem with my foster dogs quite often. The foster pet dog will lie at my feet guarding me from my pet dog Ace and I don’t even realize it because Ace doesn’t protest. The poor person just goes and lies down across the room! So be aware is all I’m saying. (2019 update: Ace has passed away.)

4. Don’t allow your other pet dog to barge up and hog your attention.

Likewise, you shouldn’t allow your other pet dog to barge up and steal your attention away when you’re choosing to give affection to the first dog. Gir det mening? Don’t allow either pet dog to sit and guard you and don’t allow either pet dog to barge up when you choose to give affection to one or the other.

When a pet dog tries to barge in and hog the attention, block him with your body, tell him “no” or put him in a down/stay across the room.

5. work on general obedience with both dogs.

Obviously, you want to work on general training with both your dogs. Every pet dog must learn to lie down and stay on command for up to 20 minutes or a lot more with no distractions. If your dogs can’t do that, then stKunst med 15 sekunder.

Når du hilser hundene dine etter jobb, må du gi kjærlighet til kjæledyrhunden som ikke hopper. Hvis du ser en av hundene dine ligge stille på kjæledyrsengen hennes, diskutere og rose henne.

Og det sier seg selv, men sørg også for at begge hundene får mye trening! Generelt får ikke hunder i USA nesten nok trening.

My pet dog has A Wound & Drain Tract Under His Tail That Won’t Heal

How’s that for a title?

My lab mix Ace has had a medical problem for the last 3.5 months.

It is a “puncture” type wound under his tail that just will not heal.

The wound in some cases drains a clear liquid as well as has a “drain tract” that leads all the way above the tail as well as into the best side of his lower back area.

The wound is near the anal gland area, however the gland is not affected.

We have tried lots of things.

We tried several rounds of different antibiotics over two months. We tried waiting. We tried surgery (more on that below).

Our vet does not understand why this wound & draining won’t go away.

It’s frustrating, expensive and – since of the area affected – it’s a little embarrassing and gross. (I’m not going to publish any type of pictures of the actual wound, however if any individual wants to see I will email a picture.) Above all, I’m concerned about my dog.

I have held back on sharing this info since for so long we have not had answers as well as still don’t.

The vet originally suspected a foxtail had somehow traveled up into Ace’s butt/back, as well as Ace had surgery Dec. 7 to remove it. The vet never discovered a foxtail however removed what he descried as a great deal of scar tissue equaling the size of a “small lemon” along this distinct “drain tract.”

We assumed whatever foxtail or “foreign body” was stuck in there would’ve likely been pulled out, hidden in all that scar tissue.

We thought that would be the end of it.

But now, right here we are five weeks later. My dog’s incision has healed nicely. He has recovered from the surgery. as well as yet, this “puncture” that went away briefly came back as well as won’t go away.

We walk about a half-mile per day slowly as well as he sniffs whatever so it takes us a great half-hour to go that distance as well as it truly tests my patience.

I don’t understand if his lower energy is related to him being an nearly 10-year-old pet dog (and always quite lazy anyway) vs. what might be related to this drain tract.

What we’re doing now

We are currently making decisions about whether to step ahead with an ultrasound or other type of imaging to discover out if there is still something stuck in there or if there is maybe a strange-acting tumor or a lesion of some sort.

We are likewise hoping it will just randomly go away.

For now, Ace is OK. I’m thankful for that. There are much worse things we might be going through.

Breaking Your current Dog’s bad habits before adding a second dog

You have to be a little crazy to want two dogs.

So for those of you with four or five, well … I don’t know about you. ?

Seriously though, I am looking forward to adding a second dog to our family. I just really like to have things planned out and under control.

I don’t like when multiple dogs turn into complete chaos.

You know, like when you walk into someone’s house and three dogs are barking and jumping on you and their owner is so immune she doesn’t even notice?

I don’t want that.

But, the types of dogs I’m interested in (Weimaraner, Belgian malinois, German shepherd, Jack Russell) are so active and known to be challenging, I’m trying to plan some sort of routine NOW, before we actually get this hypothetical, hyperactive pup.

For me, this routine involves two things:

1. planning a serious exercise routine for a young dog.

2. Discouraging certain bad habits from my current dog.

I’m going over my own ideas here, but it’s not that people should copy these. Instead, they should think about their own routines.

First: Exercise

I want a dog that can tag along when I run and hike. Unfortunately, this means the dog will need lots of activity each day and not just on the days I’m interested in running.

So how to prepare for this?

Lett. start a running routine NOW, before we even get the dog.

Sure, I’m active enough. I take my clients’ dogs running and I walk with my dog Ace first thing in the morning.

But … my dog Ace retired from running two years ago so I currently don’t run in the mornings.

Well that’s about to change because I want a high-energy dog but I also want that dog to be able to chill out while I write blog posts. I have high expectations for my dogs. being able to lie quietly is a requirement. So I have to commit to my side of the deal too, which is running.

Might as well make it a habit ahead of time.

Other tips:

Invest in a dog backpack. best tool ever!

Also, recruit other family members to help with the exercise. My spouse will be taking on some of the evening exercise shifts.

Second: Discouraging bad habits from my current dog

No dog is perfect, but Ace is pretty dang close. ?

Two habits I’d like to discourage before we add another pup include:

1. Whining

2. cat chasing.

Ace will always be a whiner.

I think that’s just how he is, but I also know I’ve encouraged it (unintentionally) over the years. He’s actually throwing a tantrum right now. He’s in the other room growling because he wants to eat but I’m not done working. Sukk …

Simply, I acknowledge his whining too often. I coddle him. I scold him. I give him what he wants. I know better, but I can’t help it.

So … if I could actually ignore his whining more consistently, it would make a difference. I’m not going to break his habit at this point, but I can try to decrease it.

When he whines for attention, I’m going to do my best to ignore. If he doesn’t stop, then I will either calmly move him to another room or just get up move to another room myself.

In other words, whining equals no response from me. Ønsk meg lykke til! Ace is a giant baby.

Cat chasing.

Ace is not a cat chaser, but what happens is he likes to play “backup” if I scold my cats for scratching or getting into something. Ace feels the need to, shall we say, “muzzle-punch” the cats. We call it a dolphin punch.

It’s cute, but only because Ace is a substantial softy.

All the cats have to do is make eye contact and Ace goes to a corner and licks himself.

But you can think of what could happen if a new dog sees Ace charging our cats and muzzle-punching them. It doesn’t take much for a dog’s prey drive to kick in. We can’t take any chances.

I’ve been on top of this for a few months already. The “cat nosing” is no longer allowed.

So those are really the things I’m focused on before we get a second dog: Exercise, and diminishing my dog’s whining and cat harassing.

I’m sure there are other things I should be focused on, but those are the main ones for now.

Rodrigo The Border Collie Mix

I fjor var den aller første fjerde juli at kjæledyrhunden hennes Rodrigo ikke var et “bunt med nerver”, ifølge Kim Gauthier, som bevarer bloggen, holder halen surret.
